Empowerment

During this stage we are concerned with finding what stage the participant is at on the transtheoretical model of behavior change and getting them to the preparation phase.  If the participant is at the precontemplation phase, it is our goal to get them to the contemplation phase, then to the preparation phase.  If the participant is at the contemplation phase, our goal is to move the to the preparation phase.  Once they are at the preparation phase, the goal is to convince them they have every tool necessary to make this change.  At this point, hopefully, we shift to the action phase together.  The first step in empowerment, is meeting the participant where they are, this requires an assessment.  The assessment we use is one that mirrors the Lifestyle and Health-History Questionnaire as it is a very comprehensive lifestyle assessment.

Education

This wellness and community health training program provides basic information in the following areas: (1) physical activity, (2) diet and nutrition, (3) sleep, (4) hydration, (5) affirmations, meditation, and prayer, and (6) summary and other considerations.  Each subject is a separate module and each module comes with a downloadable worksheet.  You are to fill in the worksheet spaces with the information from the video.  Once you have completed all of the worksheets, combine them all into your health and wellness workbook to use as a guide for basic information.

Evaluation

Now that you know where you've been, you can determine where you're headed…

The key to success in any lifestyle change is making SMART goals and not disrupting your current lifestyle to soon and too extremely.  So here we focus on where you have been, where you are, and where you want to be.  We then use the empowerment and education you have received in the previous phases to assist you in evaluating your lifestyle and your approach to change.  This is where the transformative participatory evaluation piece comes in.

Expectations

Efficacy expectations and outcome expectations have been found to be predictors in outcomes.  Research has found that increases in efficacy and outcome expectations result in less stress and anxiety and better performance.  At this phase of the study, we are concerned with growing outcome and efficacy expectations by creating small manageable goals and challenges to motivate participants into forming efficacy and outcome expectations.

Pay it Forward through Group Leadership

The initial study will start with a small group of about 30 participants.  From there, it is anticipated that those 30 will like the program and their results enough to keep going with it.  Every cycle a person does graduates them to the next level of leadership.  The goal is to grow a large community of health and wellness participants that sustains itself on the enthusiasm and success of its participants.  Eventually group leaders will allow for us to expand the size of our community and sponsorship which will allow us to provide this program to more people, free of charge to them.

Relapse Support

Relapse is not failure, it is learning in progress.  Do not be afraid to brush it off and jump back in.  No one is keeping points, we are here to support each other.  Should you go missing, we will send someone to find you and support you through your moment away.  Believe it or not, we are in this together.  Let us prove the value of our community by showing you unconditional support through your phases of "learning in progress."
